Today I present you the LED LENSER M14. It is a focusable LED flashlight company Two brothers, the most likely one of you is a term . I have long toyed with the idea, I buy a LED LENSER, since I do at the moment with a no-name light through the forest walk, but I could not decide on the one hand and on the other hand, there were some things that bothered me. But I can tell schonmal: these drawbacks have been eliminated !

But first to the flashlight itself: it was delivered in a stylish, compact gift box. In addition to the flashlight I was given a belt clip, wrist strap and of course, a manual and a quick guide in credit card format (and paper).

M14 Ausstattung

addition, it is already equipped with batteries: The LED LENSER M14 requires 4 AA batteries or rechargeable batteries. For the latter, I must express my schonmal praise, because the loss of warranty for battery use was for me so far one of the reasons why I have no LED LENSER. That this has now changed, I am very .

SIZE AND WEIGHT: If you look at the flashlight to see Staring photos, it looks quite small and handy. Especially if you had, like me, already the LED Lenser P7 in the hand, one M14 is the size of the LED Lenser but a little surprised. To illustrate, I took a picture of the M14 in my hand (I'm glove holder size XS / S - And left-handed, which is not too good for the logo presentation ):

M14 in der Hand

For those who want to know more (or the size of my hand does not know ) I have the lamp again measured correctly. With the extended focus it is 17.5 cm, 16.0 cm long retracted. At the top it has a diameter of 4.7 cm, 3.9 cm on the body.

However, the lamp is not too big to be just as time to put into a jacket pocket. If you would not want that, and still wants to have his hands free, the so-called "Intelligent Clip " was included. This is a Gürteclip from solid plastic that can be aligned in 8 different positions (each offset by 45 °). I initially thought that the alignment is a torch to the front at the height of the belt is relatively impractical, but I was wrong . If you put the M14 on the broadest focus (more on that later), it gives off a pleasant, long-range light, very pleasant when you walk through the area and needs the hands for example, GPS or pencil and paper. Advantage over a head lamp: the M14 clipped to your belt does not annoy as much as a dangling end on the packet. Disadvantage: If you wear a coat, it is difficult to attach the clip and the bulb to release the belt. Then you can hang it possible for an outside pocket. Also, I personally am apparently not strong enough to pull the clip from the lamp ... He is built very solid (but otherwise not difficult), he should not really go wrong, but I prefer to push the lamp from the holder, rather than subtract them. Christyan also preferred this option, which I see as a shortcoming, however, not really - it's just the clip.

Maybe some importance is the weight of the lamp. In the first few minutes does the LED LENSER M14 quite heavy, but the longer you use it, the less is this weight on yet. My kitchen scale says that the torch weighs (with full set of batteries) 359 grams compared to my phone gerademal weighs 115 grams for an expedition, where you drag each gram of the whole day with them permanently, would be the first torch probably not the lamp choice, but I still see the weight only as a small point of criticism. If I had slight flashlights in use, I had always reach into his pocket to see if I have not lost. The loss of 359 grams falls directly on , also I find that the M14 better just by their weight in the hand. The clip is strong enough the way, built to the flashlight in any position to hold firmly and securely, without having the feeling that he breaks off, the lamp falls out or the like.

POWER SUPPLY: As mentioned above, the LED LENSER M14 is powered by 4 AA (AA) batteries. Batteries are also possible, but in aid of a voltage of 1.2 V have. This means that the lamp should not be powered by lithium-ion batteries, as they have 3.7V. But I see absolutely no downside to - I just thought that for some readers, they also use lithium-ion batteries, perhaps relevant. I find the choice of AA size battery as a very convenient because my navigator (Garmin Oregon 300) and also the way my digital camera (Kodak EasyShare C613) can also be operated with two AA batteries. I need only take AA batteries or recharge, and thus each of the devices can operate .

In this context, the company two brothers in the LED LENSER M14 with something beautiful can be: There are 2 " Energy Modes ": First, the " Constant Current " mode, in which the lamp throughout with same voltage is supplied (constant current control). This has the advantage that the lamp continuously emits a nearly equally bright permanent Lichtleisung, but (once the batteries are not enough) collapses - the lamp goes out. If you look for the " Energy Saving mode decides regulates the flashlight, the light output down consistently, including a charge of light at lower power levels of your batteries is possible - but not nearly as bright as with full batteries. I find that both modes have their advantages and choose that one can run in what mode the flashlight is a very good decision . Adjustable mode is on the way to a special tap and turn-on order button, so you must no conversion work, etc. To perform to change the mode. According to Two Brothers maintains
the flashlight up to 95 hours - this course is not in the brightest mode, but the Energy Saving mode, in which down regulates the lamp up to 1 lumen. I have not tested this, but now is Rumgespiele, use and test after 2 weeks of the included battery drained so slowly. Without directly measuring the time I feel the term, however, as more than adequate. I have really played around so often, herumgeleuchtet, they presented various people and am also often walked around at night in order to test them in different environments. Clearly she is hot so far this does not yet become that I have seen in other lamps already different.

OPERATION: Like most flashlights LED LENSER the M14 has only a single button. This is on the back of the flashlight, it can only be touched or pressed quite clean. This is very useful (and, as you can see in the attached video review, even with gloves to use), because the M14 is not only natural light at maximum brightness or not, but it has again different modes. Two brothers called the whole " SMART Light Technology . How it all works, you can turn in a video see or read the following: The LED Lenser M14 has 3 basic modes: "Professional Mode ", " Easy Mode" and "Tactical Defense fashion. Within each of these modes are sending you different lighting programs. So that the many programs does not get confused, they are classified in three modes. The following is a summary of the programs in each mode:

Professional Mode:
  • 100% brightness
  • 15% brightness
  • Between 15% and 100% brightness (dimming free!)
  • flashing
  • SOS Flashing strobe mode
Easy Mode:
  • 100% brightness
  • 15% brightness
  • Between 15% and 100% brightness (! Free dimmable)
Tactical Defense Mode:
  • 100% brightness
  • Strobe mode

I find this division very well . If you want to use all the features you select the Professional Mode, you just need a flashlight to light that one would only adjust the brightness of the Easy Mode and if you are staying in uncertain climes, the Tactical Defense Mode. The strobe light is not to underestimate way. It is so annoying that I assume that in addition to badgers and wild boar people can at least fend off a short time. For me, as geocachers and woman in the strobe mode is therefore doubly useful. The fact that it can directly without much Rumgetippe requests and setting-select is, especially in difficult situations very important!
and I use the blinking and flashing SOS likely to remain very rare. But these modes do not bother me too, so they are simply there - who knows if I'll still need .
The remaining possibility is dimming. You can choose the lighting levels free free of 15% to 100%. The lamp is in holding the button halfway just slowly brighter and darker again, until you let go of the button, the brightness level it then remains. Very handy! This keeps a variety of choices, for example 20%, 30%, 40 %,... save that one would have to tap the desired level for now.

Two very advantageous things related to these modes schonmal first: No matter how often the LED LENSER M14 one-off and it stays in one of the 3 main modes until they are surrounded (which can be do not accidentally). In addition, the lamp is on power, no matter which mode you are in, as always 100% light output. If it is off and you just type it once and keeps they touched, they are (again, no matter the mode) 130% brightness. Such a simple use of the lamp is possible without much reflection, if only they just need. It has directly just like bright light and good . Big advantage compared to what some other programmable lamp .

The mode is selected by turning the knob 4 times in a row and then tapping once turned on. The lamp confirms the mode dial with a brief flash: 1 flash for Professional, Easy and 2 times for 3 times for Tactical Defense Mode. The feedback from the lamp on the mode conversion is good thing. This saves you the switching and brooding, in which mode you now just has really changed .

The modes themselves are in the supplied credit card-index on simple:

M14 Modi Übersicht

looks for some, this overview of perhaps quite uneinprägsam, but I have the operation very quickly understood and really need this card does not, because the operation is really intuitive, if the first lamp in his hand.

FOCUS: addition to the various modes that affect the brightness of the light, the LED LENSER M14 also has a focusable head also " Advanced Focus System referred. As you could see above in the measurement of the lamp, the focus is the LED Lenser M14 by the lamp head forward or backward sliding. Fully extended, throws light on a very focused beam, stowed a far-reaching, but obviously not as bright looking light beam (Also, the lumens are of course the same but the Lux fall logically ). Both indoors and outdoors of the unfocused mode is very enjoyable. The light is emitted uniformly, there is no visible rings (who ever had a Maglite or similar in the hand, knows exactly what I mean). Really very pleasant Light, one of the points on which I enjoy most about this flashlight. The focused light then the M14 shows its full 225 lumens in a nutshell. A precise, light beam is emitted into the distance. It can be seen illuminating objects at the other end of the road or forest road and. According to two brothers, the lamp reaches 280 meters wide, can not deny me.

observed in the above photos please to look like my actually pretty good digital camera is through the increased exposure in the vicinity when retracted focus the light brighter than it really is . Furthermore there is snow, which can affect the whole is also brighter. can I think the light output can be in the attached video best describe you accurately assess the brightness and viewing angle of the lamp but of course only in real life. And since I must say that I'm really excited . In the photos you see a reflector in the tree: both the focused, as well as in non-focused mode, you can see the reflector significantly (in real life the way it even clearer in the video also beautifully clear). For night caches this flashlight is suitable definitely very good! A very nice additional feature is the way that you can lock the focus in every possible position by the head lamp about 5 millimeters turns left. Then the focus is fixed and can not be changed. Solving one does this, of course, by the lamp head rotates back to the right. The focus can be operated with one hand, if one does not just cotton gloves with (like me in the video). Also I can with my XS / S hands to operate the focus with one hand. A person with normal sized hands should probably not even embrace. This short video explains the one-hand operation on the best:

ROBUSTNESS: According to the description, the flashlight Splash proof to IP54 standard. I have not tested this, but does the LED LENSER M14, as if they would comply with this condition also. The button is rubber and if unscrewing the lamp, to get to the battery compartment, you find a seal ring that sits nice and firm. Only the focus holds the torch (probably) on it to be completely waterproof. Since I do not go diving in the pouring rain and also revisit the rather dry, I personally see no problem in . For extreme outdoor enthusiasts, the strip even in the pouring monsoon rain in the wilderness, would have to test the limits of this lamp. I will personally prefer it does not appear arrive (for this beautiful lamp is a shame!) and give me satisfaction with protection against splashing water.
The case looks simple, but from yet very elegant. I go with my electronic stuff to actually always very carefully, but since I use them to stay strokes eg not. After 2 weeks of use one can already see some very minor signs of use. The black paint on the housing comes off and you see the silver of the aluminum at a few small spots minimal (only on the edge, to which one is the light at the edge and back to back). Since I have no idea about the painting of aluminum, I do not know if we make this better could. And before you attach to these sites rubber covers, I take the small traces prefer buying .

APPLICATION / PRACTICE TEST: But what do you actually need such a powerful flashlight? For me, as geocachers clear: Continuously ! As this blog already often very inconspicuous and was addressed by the way, Christyan and I are geocachers. And if we emulate times less of the University of view, we make love to night cache. Since Christyan yet had no useful flashlight and accordingly rumkroch virtually on their knees with the 20 lumens lamp head in hand, to recognize something I have chosen him to test the second flashlight with me. As you can probably already read out from this blog post, I've already set more often and more intensively with the topic LED flashlight, while Christyan main impact is that it will light and practical. So we form a team of Tecknik freak and ease of use, the LED LENSER M14 were allowed to test. As a practical test for the flashlight of course we have a small bedside cache selected (and in the end there were then two, because my night cache a few surprises revealed ). Since this is my very first video review and Christyan because of Christmas and New Year's visit was very brief, we had little time to film the video review and it is also improvised a bit - but that shows my opinion is very good as it looks nunmal if, as geocachers at night through the forest, running and so also the practice test over very real. Here is the video:

I'm sorry that it wobbles at times as in Film "Blair Witch Project " and that some cuts in it, but first there was the memory card is full, then the battery is empty - of course is almost everything happened, what could happen to complicate the review. Nevertheless, I think that you can see the extensive photo of the LED Lenser M14 in the video well. Finally, a very stylish picture of the reflector lens in action:

The conclusion:

PRO: The LED LENSER M14 is a multifunctional flashlight with very good brilliance. The 225 lumen in combination with the Advanced Focus System illuminate the surroundings more than adequate. You can quickly switch from short-illumination in long-distance illumination and vice versa. The Photograph is smooth and pleasant white. The focus is meticulously crafted, there are no rings form in the photograph, the focus is also determined. The programs are light with 3 modes pleasantly divided, so are easily selected according to need all the required functions. Also the change of modes is a breeze. In any mode you simply by pressing the button 230 lumens bright light. There is a light program where you can dim the light between 15% and 100% free. 4 AA batteries are required, and batteries can be used (very good!). Whether the lamp is to be operated with or without constant current control, can be chosen freely.

CONS: The LED Lenser M14 weighs almost 360 grams and is quite heavy. Even if that means very good in the hand, I can imagine that some users this is too heavy. Already after 2 weeks Average user minimal abrasion of the black paint are visible. Time will tell how big these scratches are still (just a flaw in appearance, not in functionality!). In addition, the clip is very stable but not too pleasant to be removed from the lamp.

I personally find that the Contra-points are only minor weaknesses that can be up to it. Also weigh the arguments of many pro- LED LENSER M14 Contras on this many times. This flashlight is definitely a good choice for the tech-savvy Geocacher! Even for people who simply need a good flashlight is suitable to use thanks to simple, one-handed focusing and pleasant LED light very well.

The LED LENSER M14 is available from early February 2011.
